Spiritual Growth Steps


Step 1 — I’m exploring…
what a relationship with Jesus means. I think there is a God, but I’m not entirely sure. Faith is not a high priority in my life, but I am curious about spiritual things.

Characteristics:
• I am open-minded
• I am intentional in my pursuit of truth

Next Steps:
• Attend weekend services.
• Pick up a Step 1 information packet at the Stepping Stones table in the lobby.
• Participate in a Small Group.*
• Participate in an upcoming Stepping Stones class.
• Serve in the Connections, Compassion or Next Generation Ministry.
• Check online for current serving opportunities.
• Pray – Ask God to reveal Himself to you in a life-changing way.
• Read the Book of John (a copy is included in the Step 1 information packet).

Step 2 — I’m growing…
in my faith. I believe in God and have trusted my life to Jesus. Now I am trying to figure out what it means to follow Him in my everyday life.

Characteristics:
• I believe salvation cannot be earned; it’s a free gift from God.
• I believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
• I believe the Bible is humankind’s final authority on truth.
• I believe that God wants to be and is actively involved in my life.
• I want Jesus to be first priority in my life.
• I am beginning to exhibit some of the Fruit of the Spirit* in my life.

Next Steps:
• Read your Bible daily.
• Begin to incorporate Personal Spiritual Habits* into your daily routine.
• Pick up a Step 2 information packet at the Stepping Stones table in the lobby.
• Discover your Spiritual Gift(s) (download here).
• Pursue Baptism (call the BP office for more information).
• Pursue Membership (call the BP office for more information).
• Begin serving in your area(s) of giftedness (information is available at The HUB).
• Join or facilitate a Small Group.
• Participate in an upcoming Stepping Stones class.
• Begin weaving your spiritual story – how you came to faith in Jesus and the difference He is making in your life – into     your everyday conversation.
• Build accountability relationships* with one or more close friends.

Step 3 — I’m close to Christ…
though I do not get it right every time, I am making conscious choices to put Jesus’ teachings and actions into practice.

Characteristics:
Personal Spiritual Habits* are a high priority in my life.
• I am tithing.
• I am Investing & Inviting.*
• I strategically and intentionally share my faith story with others.
• I am in deep friendship and community with other believers.
• I am beginning to exhibit more of the Fruit of the Spirit* in my life.

Next Steps:    
• Read your Bible daily.
• Spend time in prayer.
• Spend time meditating on Scripture.
• Spend time in solitude with God.
• Belong to or lead a Small Group.*
• Participate in or lead a Stepping Stones class.
• Participate in serving opportunities both inside and outside the church.
• Seek a more involved role in your area(s) of giftedness.
• Build mentoring relationships.

Step 4 — I’m Christ-Centered…
I am all in regarding my commitment to Jesus. God’s kingdom is my first priority. I understand that my time, talent, and treasures are all gifts from God, and that all of my choices are a reflection of my relationship with Jesus.

Characteristics:
• I am willing to risk what is important to me for Jesus.
• I believe a follower of Jesus should live a life of modesty and generosity, not a life characterized by the pursuit of material possessions.
Personal Spiritual Habits* are first priortiy in my schedule.
• I am tithing.
• I am Investing & Inviting.*
• I regularly practice lifestyle evangelism.
• I have deep friendships and am in community with other believers.
• I have spiritually-accountable relationships with several close friends.
• I participate in opportunities to serve outside the church.
• I am growing in and habitually exhibiting much of the Fruit of the Spirit* in my life.

Next Steps:
• Read you Bible daily.
• Pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
• Consistently spend time meditating on Scripture.
• Consistently spend time in solitude with God.
• Belong to or lead a Small Group.*
• Participate in or lead a Stepping Stones class.
• Serve faithfully in your area of giftedness.
• Become a mentor.
