Meditate on It.
This is a word that is sorely misunderstood – but we meditate on all kinds of things every day: How are my kids doing in school? What will my car repairs cost? Will the Lions make the playoffs this year? Meditating is just pondering; mulling something over; keeping it at the forefront of your mind. Exchange meditating on your worries for the day with a encouraging verse. Choose one that speaks to your situation or to what you’re currently studying.
Then visualize what is going on in the passage. For example, if you’re reading The Parable of the Good Samaritan imagine you’re the person asking Jesus, Who is my neighbor? (Luke 10:29) How would you feel listening to this parable? How would you respond? You may want to write out your thoughts in a journal for future reference.
Making a habit of meditating will help you tremendously – there simply will be times you won’t have your Bible or journal with you. It is then you can recall Scripture.
