Write It.

Write it.

As we study the Bible, we begin to see Who God is and how He works. We learn how Jesus responds to things. Spending time every day re-patterns the way we think and transforms our mind (see Romans 12:1-2).

Writing things out – what we call journaling – is an excellent way to both record and process what God is saying to us. It’s also a useful tool to use at a later time, to reflect on and review the ways God works in our life. Without writing them down, we may forget these blessings – and some very important lessons! And while journaling is a very personal time with Jesus, there may be times we’ll want to share some of our insights with a friend or family member, our small group or mentor(s) – to share what we’ve learned and to be an encouragement to others who may be going through a situation similar to our experience.

Getting Started: All you need is a Bible (electronic or otherwise), any type of notebook and a pen/pencil (or your laptop), and a comfortable spot in your home, favorite coffee shop, library, etc. The key is consistency – choose the best time of day for you and stick with it. Find that place where you’re comfortable, and there’ll be no distractions or interruptions.

If this seems a little overwhelming, take it slow and keep it simple. No one is going to grade your spelling or grammar, quiz you later, or scrutinize the length of your journal entry for the day, so don’t worry about any of these things. The most important thing is to keep your daily appointment because God is always ready, willing, and waiting for you!

Of course, there will be times your journal is not accessible for quick reference (like standing in the 10 Items or Less express lane behind someone with 37 items). This is when the next step is helpful…
